3 Must Have Supplements for Leaky Gut

Leaky gut syndrome is a condition also known as “intestinal permeability,” which refers to a condition in the digestive tract where protective proteins are damaged. This damage results in “bad” bacteria entering the gut, causing system wide inflammation.  Once inflammation begins, over time it can lead to food sensitivity, inflammatory bowel disease, thyroid issues, eczema and anxiety, to name a few.

Healing a leaky gut is vital to your immune system, and while it won’t happen overnight, with a proper treatment plan you can begin to heal rather quickly. At Thrive Functional Wellness, our approach is holistic and begins with finding the root of the problem. Adjusting your diet and adding supplements is a monumental first step in healing the gut. While there are several supplements that we use in our practice, the three supplements that continually bring our clients success are:

L-Glutamine

L-Glutamine is an anti-inflammatory amino acid that is great for repairing damage to the gut and intestinal lining. Not only does this L-Glutamine help the gut lining to regrow and repair it also aids in reducing sugar cravings.

Digestive Enzymes

High quality digestive enzymes add great benefit to healing a leaky gut. Taking these before and after your meals will help break down proteins, sugars and starches and help prevent inflammation.

Probiotics

Probiotics are pretty amazing, in that depending on the strain you can customize your intake to maximize healing. For example, some probiotics enhance immune function and others promote health or hormone balance.

There are several other supplements that are beneficial to healing and maintaining a healthy gut:

  • GI Resolve
  • Turmero
  • Fiber
  • Bone broth
  • Zinc
  • Collagen peptides
  • Magnesium
  • Betaine HCI
  • Omega 3 fatty acids
  • Vitamin D with K
  • Curcumin
  • Berberine

The list can be a bit overwhelming if you are just starting to look for solutions, but a certified functional medicine practitioner can help you navigate and select what is best for your personal situation. If you are seeking supplements on your own, always consider brand quality and do your research so that you are purchasing the best possible option.
