Treating Thyroid & Adrenal Disorders

Find Thyroid Relief With Functional Medicine

Thyroid and adrenal disorders can cause many troubling symptoms – ranging from exhaustion to weight gain to trouble concentrating. Too often, patients are told that their thyroid levels are “normal” when they aren’t. There could be a medical explanation for your tiredness, forgetfulness, and depression. Let’s start reclaiming your health!

Quick Overview of Thyroid & Adrenal Disorders

Your thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland that resides in the front of your neck. Though the thyroid is small, it is mighty. Your thyroid hormones are used throughout the body, in nearly every tissue. Women and men with thyroid disorders feel terrible physically, and this impacts so many areas of their lives, from relationships with spouses and children, to productivity at work, to the ability to exercise and recover well.

Conventional medicine’s approach is to medicate thyroid patients with a synthetic thyroid hormone replacement, but this approach does not address the underlying reason someone isn’t producing enough thyroid hormones in the first place.

If you have a thyroid imbalance, you may also have an issue with a hormone called cortisol, which is produced by the adrenal glands. Cortisol is a steroid hormone that regulates a wide range of processes throughout the body, including metabolism and the immune response. It also has a very important role in helping the body respond to stress. But chronically high cortisol levels can cause weight gain, especially around the belly. It will also cause fatigue, depression, trouble concentrating, and blood pressure issues If you have a thyroid disorder, understanding how cortisol impacts you is even more important, as high cortisol will lower your TSH, or thyroid stimulating hormone, block the thyroid hormone at its receptor site, and lower the conversion of T4 to T3 (the only kind of thyroid hormone that your body can actually use).

The most critical thing to know regarding your thyroid condition is that 90% of Hypothyroid cases are due to an autoimmune disorder, mostly a condition called Hashimoto’s. So simply taking drugs like synthroid, levothyroxine, or np thyroid does not address the underlying problem, which is that your immune system is attacking and breaking down the thyroid.
