Hidden Stressors Your Body May Be Experiencing

Last week we talked about something many women discover in midlife: Stress isn’t just emotional — it affects how your body functions. And I know many of you can probably relate to this. You might look at your life and think: “Things are actually pretty good right now… so why don’t I feel better?” I hear this often from women in my wellness practice. They’ll say things like: “I don’t feel overly stressed, but I’m tired all the time.” Or “Nothing dramatic is happening in my life, but I just don’t feel like myself.” Maybe you’ve noticed things like:

  • waking up during the night • feeling exhausted in the afternoon • brain fog • weight that suddenly won’t budge • feeling more easily overwhelmed than you used to

It can feel confusing, especially when life seems relatively stable. But what many women don’t realize is that the body experiences many different types of stress, not just emotional stress. And sometimes those hidden stressors quietly build up over time. In functional wellness, we often think about stress in three main categories.

The Three Types of StressEmotional Stress

This is the type of stress most people recognize. Work demands, family responsibilities, caregiving, or feeling like there are simply too many things on your plate. Many midlife women are balancing multiple roles, and even when we love the people and responsibilities in our lives, it can still place demands on the body.

Physical Stress

Physical stress is something I see very often, and many women don’t immediately recognize it. Things like:

  • poor sleep • chronic fatigue • overexercising • illness or inflammation • digestive discomfort

When the body is constantly working to keep up, it eventually starts asking for more support.

Chemical Stress

This category often surprises people. Chemical stress refers to things happening inside the body or in our environment that can create additional strain. Examples include:

  • blood sugar swings • processed foods • food sensitivities • environmental toxins • chronic inflammation

These stressors may not feel obvious day to day, but over time they can affect how the body feels and functions. One woman recently said something that really stuck with me. She told me, “I kept thinking I just needed more discipline or motivation… but the truth is I was exhausted.” Once we started looking at the different types of stress her body was experiencing — poor sleep, blood sugar swings, and a very full schedule — things started to make much more sense. And the encouraging part is that when we begin reducing even one or two stressors, the body often responds quickly. Stress Inventory Prompts This Week’s Tool: The Stress Inventory This week, I invite you to pay attention and journal for a few days about the types of stress your body may be experiencing. I love the awareness and patterns that we find when we journal and track.  Take a few minutes each day to reflect on these three areas: Emotional Stress Work demands, family responsibilities, or feeling overwhelmed. Physical Stress Sleep quality, fatigue, illness, or lack of recovery. Chemical Stress Food choices, inflammation, blood sugar swings, or environmental exposures. You don’t need to fix anything right away. Simply noticing patterns can often bring helpful clarity.

Next Week

Next week we’ll explore something many women find incredibly helpful (and are some of my personal favorites) Simple somatic practices that calm the nervous system and help the body shift out of stress mode. These are small techniques you can use throughout the day to help your body reset.

If You’d Like to Connect

I work with women through my functional wellness practice where we help uncover the root causes behind symptoms like fatigue, hormone changes, inflammation, sleep disruption, and weight gain. When needed, we also use advanced testing, including saliva testing to evaluate adrenal function and cortisol patterns throughout the day, along with comprehensive bloodwork.
