3 Healthy Foods For A Healthy Gut

Gut health is an essential component of your well-being. When your gut is healthy, you feel energetic and full of vitality. You may have gut health issues if you are plagued with constipation, diarrhea, bloating, and persistent flatulence. It can also affect other aspects of your health that are not directly related to your digestive system.

Gut Health can affect your heart, brain, and immune system. If you are struggling with gut problems, your mood can definitely be affected. Research has shown that an unhealthy gut has also been linked to certain autoimmune diseases and cancers.

However, there is good news! Your gut health can be improved by consuming certain foods. Below are our top three foods for gut health:

Leafy Green Vegetables

Leafy greens are packed with nutrients that promote gut health. They are a rich source of vitamins A, C, and K. They also add fiber and folate to your diet.

One of the little-known facts about leafy greens is that they contain a special sugar called sulfoquinovose that promotes the growth of good bacteria in the gut while keeping the bad bacteria at bay.

Some examples of leafy green vegetables that you can try are kale, spinach, collard greens, Romaine lettuce, and watercress. Leafy green vegetables are invaluable to gut health.

Omega 3 Fats

Fish oil supplements can lower elevated triglyceride levels. Having high levels of this blood fat puts you at risk for heart disease and stroke.

Besides keeping a healthy gut, Omega 3 Fats have other benefits:

Rheumatoid arthritis. Fish oil supplements (EPA+DHA) may curb stiffness and joint pain. Omega-3 supplements also seem to boost the effectiveness of anti-inflammatory drugs.

Depression. Some researchers have found that cultures that eat foods with high levels of omega-3s have lower levels of depression. The effects of Fish oil supplements on depression have been mixed. More research is needed to see if it can make a difference.

Baby development. DHA appears to be important for visual and neurological development in infants.

Asthma. A diet high in omega-3s lowers inflammation, a key component in asthma. But more studies are needed to show if fish oil supplements improve lung function or cut the amount of medication a person needs to control the condition.

ADHD. Some studies show that fish oil can reduce the symptoms of ADHD in some children and improve their mental skills, like thinking, remembering, and learning. But more research is needed in this area, and omega-3 supplements should not be used as a primary treatment.

Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Some research suggests that omega-3s may help protect against Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, and have a positive effect on gradual memory loss linked to aging. But that’s not certain yet.

Fruits with a low fructose content

High fructose fruits tend to cause bloating and gas. As such we recommend low fructose fruit for gut health. Some options are berries, cherries, grapefruit, and oranges.

Banana is also a good choice as well since the inulin it contains encourages the growth of good bacteria in your gut.
