31 Aug It’s Not About Calcium: The Truth About Bone Density in Midlife
Lately, I’ve been hearing more and more women talk about bone density. Some have had recent scans. Some are worried because osteoporosis runs in their family. Some are trying to be proactive and wondering: “Should I be taking calcium?” “Do I need more dairy?” “Is bone loss just part of getting older?” And honestly… I understand why there’s so much confusion. Because for years, women have been given a very simplified message: 👉 Take calcium and protect your bones. But after working with women in midlife for years — and navigating some of these conversations myself — I’ve learned there’s a much bigger story. Bone health is not just about calcium. In fact, some of the women I see eating yogurt daily and faithfully taking calcium supplements are still struggling with declining bone density, inflammation, low muscle mass, fatigue, or hormonal imbalances. Because our bones don’t exist in isolation. They reflect what’s happening throughout the entire body.
One of the Biggest Myths I Hear
“Bone loss is inevitable after menopause.” And while hormonal shifts absolutely matter, I don’t believe women should feel doomed by aging. What I see instead is that many women simply haven’t been taught how interconnected everything is. Our bones are constantly rebuilding. And that rebuilding process depends on so much more than calcium alone. Things like:
- muscle mass
- protein intake
- stress levels
- inflammation
- hormone balance
- digestion and nutrient absorption
All influence bone health.
Muscle Matters More Than Most Women Realize
This is one area I find myself talking about constantly lately — especially with women over 45. Many women spent years dieting, eating lightly, avoiding protein, or focusing mostly on cardio. Now we’re realizing: Muscle is protective. Not just for metabolism. Not just for strength. But for our bones too. Strong muscles help stimulate and support healthy bones. This is why I encourage women to stop thinking only about being “smaller” and start thinking about being stronger. That shift changes everything.
Stress Plays a Bigger Role Than We Think
Another thing I see often with clients is chronic stress quietly affecting the body in ways they didn’t expect. When we’re constantly overwhelmed, rushing, under-eating, over-caffeinating, not sleeping well, and running on stress hormones… the body feels it. High cortisol over time can impact:
- inflammation
- hormone balance
- recovery
- sleep
- nutrient absorption
And yes — even bone health. This is one reason I believe healing in midlife has to become more holistic. Not extreme. Not obsessive. But supportive.
It’s Also About What Your Body Can Absorb
This is another important piece that often gets overlooked. You can take all the supplements in the world… But if digestion is struggling, inflammation is high, or the gut isn’t functioning well, the body may not absorb nutrients efficiently. This is why we focus so heavily on foundational health in our wellness programs:
- nourishment
- gut health
- stress support
- blood sugar balance
- minerals
- protein
- lifestyle habits
Because everything works together.
What I Personally Focus on More Now
As I’ve gotten older, my mindset around health has shifted. I’m less focused on:
- chasing perfection
- extremes
- quick fixes
And more focused on:
- strength
- consistency
- nourishment
- nervous system support
- sustainable habits
I want to feel strong. Clear-minded. Capable. Energized for the life I want to live. And I know many women feel the same way.
Sometimes There’s More Beneath the Surface
One of the things I’ve learned from working with women over the years is that bone health conversations are rarely just about bones. Often, we uncover bigger patterns happening underneath the surface:
- chronic stress
- inflammation
- low protein intake
- hormone shifts
- poor digestion or nutrient absorption
- blood sugar imbalances
- long-term under-eating
This is one reason I’m such a believer in testing instead of guessing. At Thrive Functional Wellness Center, we use comprehensive bloodwork and personalized wellness support to help women better understand what their body may be asking for during this season of life. Because sometimes the body isn’t “breaking down.” 👉 It may simply need a different kind of support than it did before. And you don’t have to figure it out alone.
3 Simple Ways to Start Supporting Your Bones This Week
If this conversation resonates with you, here are a few simple places to begin:
1. Prioritize Protein
Many women are not eating enough protein to support healthy muscles and bones. Start becoming more intentional about adding quality protein throughout the day.
2. Add Strength-Based Movement
Walking is wonderful. But our bones also benefit from resistance, strength, and muscle-building movement. This doesn’t have to mean intense workouts. Even light weights, Pilates, resistance bands, or bodyweight exercises can help.
3. Support Your Nervous System
Sleep. Stress management. Recovery. Quiet moments. Breathwork. These are not “extras.” They are part of supporting the entire body — including healthy aging. Because midlife isn’t about falling apart. It’s about learning how to support your body differently than you did before. And often, that starts by realizing: 👉 bone health is about much more than calcium alone.
